The Western Australian AIDS Council has been contracted by the Sexual Health and Blood Borne Virus Program of the Department of Health (WA) to implement a mass media campaign, “Safe Sex No Regrets” originally developed in New South Wales. The aim of the campaign is to reduce the risk of HIV and STI transmission through promoting the use of condoms.
The campaign targets heterosexual people under 30 years of age and homosexually active men under 45 years of age.
Campaign Key Messages include:
• Condoms are your best protection against HIV and STIs. • Always use a condom with new or casual partners. • HIV and STIs are on the increase for men and women in WA. • Protecting yourself and your partners is everyone’s responsibility.
Anticipated outcomes and benefits of campaign advertising include:
• Reduced risk of HIV and STI transmission among target audiences; • Increased awareness of safe sexual practice among target audiences; • Increased use of condoms to prevent HIV and STIs among target audiences; and • Increased knowledge among target audiences of HIV and STI prevention, early testing, detection and treatment.
The campaign is consistent with the principles, aims and objectives of the WA HIV/AIDS Action Plan 2006 –2008, the WA Sexually Transmitted Infections Action Plan 2006-2008 and the WA Aboriginal Sexual Health Strategy 2005-2008. It is also in line with national STI priorities.
