HIV/AIDS: The Facts

Want to know the how and why of HIV? These sessions are extremely effective in simplifying HIV/AIDS in a non-judgmental and unbiased manner.  These talks are very popular with schools and other institutions and have been ongoing for over 20 years. 

Content: HIV/AIDS definitions and epidemiology, transmission and risks, prevention, sexually transmitted infections, testing and detection, treatment
Length: Facts talks generally take one hour, however this can be adapted to suit the participant’s needs
Who: This presentation is extremely popular with high schools and tertiary institutions.  It is also suitable for community groups, professional bodies, or anyone involved in the area of sexual health, HIV/AIDS and sexuality that require current, accurate and sexual health specific information  
Group Size: WAAC caters for all group sizes, from small groups of 20 to entire school groups.

Positively Speaking

Keep It Safe Summer: Preparing for School Leavers' Celebrations

Content: Addressing youth sexual health and safe behaviour at School Leavers' celebrations.
Length: 1 hour
Who: Year 12 School Leavers' from various High Schools who will participate in Leavers' Celebrations

***This program can also provide presentations and workshops on worksite health, WAAC cervices, Women and HIV, HIV in sport and peer based education.   Presentations are tailored to cater for a range of needs.

BBVs in a Workplace Setting

Content: Definitions and epidemiology of Blood Borne Viruses (BBVs)–including Hepatitis and HIV,  transmission of BBVs, standard precautions and minimizing risk, risk assessment in a prison setting, testing and detection, occupational exposures, vaccinations and treatment.  The training also discusses relevance of Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) from exposure to HIV.

Who: This is currently implemented to groups such as Department of Corrective Services Prison Officers and can be adapted for occupational exposures in specific workplace settings

Sexual Diversity and Beats in Western Australia

Content: HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention, occupational risks, Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP),   measurements of sexuality, FBI(Feeling, Behaviour, Identity) model, gender identity, stereotyping and homophobia, male to male venues and beats
Length: 3 hours
Who: This training is currently implemented with the WA Police Academy, Population Health Units, and local Shires.  Components of this training are available for adaptation to a specific setting. 
Group Size: Up to 16 participants

Being Positive: Perspectives on living with HIV (Educational Training Resource)

The Being Positive educational resource and training has been developed in order to allow personal stories of HIV to be widely disseminated to a greater number of people than those who traditionally have access to the Talking HIV program.  The DVD ‘Being Positive’ comprises the stories of three WA people who are living with HIV and their families.  The stories are personally narrated and are interfaced with HIV/AIDS facts. Completing this training allows the participant to present this information and use this DVD in a youth setting i.e. in schools

** Use of this resource addresses many Health Studies Outcomes for Years 11 and 12.

Content: HIV/AIDS the facts (including definitions, epidemiology, transmission, prevention and treatment) , creating a safe and positive learning environment, answering difficult questions, handling sensitive issues, communication skills, values and attitudes clarification.  This training will enable facilitators to deliver the educational resource package.
Length: Approximately 3 hour training
Who: Teachers wanting PD on a sexual health topic, community groups who work with youth.  This training can contribute to PD hours for teachers in WA
