What is safer sex?

Safe sex is using condoms and water-based lubricants as well as a range of other things you can do during sex to help reduce the risk of catching or passing on STIs or HIV.

Safe sex can help:

  • prevent HIV
  • prevent pregnancy
  • prevent STIs

What are STI's?

STI’s are infections that are transmitted through close body contact, usually sexual. Sexual contact includes fucking, sucking, touching, fingering or Kissing/licking a dick, arse or vagina. For descriptions on the many STI’s, read Last Night I Picked Up Someone and Something.

What's the difference between HIV & AIDS?

Human Immunodeficiency Virus: This is a virus that can cause AIDS. It can be transmitted on from one person to another; the virus attacks the immune system. The immune system is what fights infection and other diseases in our bodies. Eventually the immune system may become overwhelmed by the HIV, and the person may be susceptible to infections that in most cases the body would be able to fight off. When a person says they are HIV positive, this means that they know they have the HIV in their body.

What is AIDS?

Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome: refers to the range of specific illnesses that people who have HIV may get when their immune system is badly damaged by HIV.

The difference between HIV and AIDS? HIV is a virus that can be passed on from one person to another. AIDS is what occurs when somebody has HIV and certain things happen because of the HIV (a combination of certain types of illness and a blood T cell count that falls below 200) when this occurs the person is then given a diagnosis of AIDS. The presence of HIV in the body does not mean that the person has AIDS; it is possible for people to have HIV for many years and have no symptoms of AIDS.
