Education
Creating new and innovative education campaigns and prevention initiatives aimed at behaviour change and decreasing at-risk activities remains a key focus for the department. Guided by the 5th National HIV/AIDS Strategy and related HIV and STI State plans the WA AIDS Council has combined a health promotion and community development approach to engage those people most at risk of acquiring HIV and raising community awareness. Harm reduction, peer education and self-empowerment are the foundation of the work we carry out. The agency uses the 1986 Ottawa Charter to underpin its work, focusing on five key actions:
- Building Healthy Public Policy
- Strengthening Community Action
- Developing Personal Skills
- Creating Supportive Environments
- Re-orienting Health Services
The department is aware of the need to respond to emerging challenges in the area including; the increase of internet technology as a tool for transmission and prevention, globalisation and the impact of CALD communities, and a move towards conservative sexual ideology.
